At the age of 19, Matt was offered a job at a small paper in his hometown, Charlottesville, Virginia. After four years at The Daily Progress Matt tried his hand at freelancing in and around Virginia. Shooting sports and portraits for a variety of universities his work appeared in numerous newspapers and publications.

In July 1997, Matt found himself living in Nairobi, Kenya. For the next two years, he worked in over 20 countries around the world, documenting people groups and the people who work with them.

In 1999 Matt returned to the States to marry Laura Berge, whom he met while serving overseas. At this time he enrolled in a year of graduate-level photography training at Ohio University. Studying under some of the best photographers and picture editors in America gave Matt a fresh look through the camera.

After finishing graduate studies, Matt worked in the Washington, D.C. area through The White House News Photographers' Association. Recent assignments have taken him to Tunisia, Bolivia, Uganda and China.
